Black Mask was the most influential detective fiction magazine ever published, and likely one of the most important periodicals published in the first part of the 20th Century, as it was to the home to the works of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.
A standard, uniform style for the series was designed, with heavy reliance on blacks and spot "shock" colors, to mimic the style of the original magazines' cover illustrations.
For these new collections, I was determined to brand the important eras of the magazine (from which each respected book was sourced) to further be broken into one of three deeper levels of branding: 1) an "early" era with the magazine's initial logo and a gold highlight, 2) the magazine's golden era, which is adorned by a modified version of the title's classic logo and highlight color of red, and 3) the later period of Black Mask, with a slightly-modified version of its later logo style, and highlighted in blue.
In addition, each series characters' stories which span several volumes are numbered, making this uniform series actually up to three levels of series branding.
